SIGMA COMICS announces new manga series

PUBLISHER OPENS ITS UNIQUE SERIES TO MANGA

February 5, 2023 – New York, NY – New York, NY – Sigma Comics announced today that it is soon releasing a manga series based on its current eight-issue comic book mini series, entitled Here Comes CALICO. The new manga series will be released in four, 192-page manga tankoban volumes, and feature right-to-left, Japanese-format reading, which is quickly growing in popularity in the United States and Europe. The strategic move is expected to broaden Sigma Comics’ notoriety and support for their unique mission of fighting animal abuse through comics, and now manga.

“After over a year of touring, and hitting over 50 conventions all across North America, manga’s incredible and fast-growing popularity is beyond clear,” said H.H. German, Sigma Comics’ founder. “We’re opening our doors to manga in an effort to bring the world of Here Comes CALICO to this wonderful audience.”

Sigma Comics’ flagship title, Here Comes CALICO, was released as a comic book in the United States in 2020, and has since sold very well at comic book and pop culture conventions all across North America. The company recently signed a distribution deal with Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc. for additional reach into comic book stores worldwide. However, due to poor distribution channels and other factors, overall sales of what are known as “floppy” comic books, have seen a marked decrease in the U.S. in recent years.

“Reckless management, and a magnificent lack of forward thinking and vision by the top comic book publishers, have brought traditional floppy comic books to its current state,” said German. “People simply don’t buy comic books anywhere near the volume they used to in years past. So as a responsible company, we’re always looking for new ways to reach new readers and share our important message.”

However, while strategic, the move is also consistent with the series’ storyline. “Our main character, The CALICO, draws inspiration from several vigilante archetypes, including Marvel Comics’ “The Punisher,” and DC Comics’ “Batman,” said German. “However, probably the biggest of all is a very famous old-school Seinen manga character; Takao Saito’s Golgo 13. He’s my favorite character of all time, and part of our story is rooted in Japanese influence, so manga was always part of the vision. The current market dynamics allow for a wonderfully convenient opportunity to embrace and add manga to our product offering, and share our series with this fast-growing market. We look forward to this great, new adventure ahead.”

As it does with all of its releases, Sigma Comics will release its first manga volume as a crowdfunded campaign, through Kickstarter. The volume will be available for pre-order from February 14 to March 14. You can sign up to be notified at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sigmacomics/here-comes-calico-manga-vol-1.
